In brief:Artemisia annua, also known as sweet wormwood or Qing Hao, is a medicinal plant from Traditional Chinese Medicine from which the compound artemisinin was isolated in 1972—still the basis of nearly all modern malaria medicines. Its discoverer, Tu Youyou, received the Nobel Prize in Medicine for this achievement in 2015. In addition to artemisinin, the plant contains several hundred other secondary plant compounds whose interactions are the subject of ongoing research. What is Artemisia annua?

Artemisia annua is an annual plant from the mugwort genus (Artemisia), originally from China. The name “annua” (Latin for “annual”) describes its life cycle: The plant germinates, grows, flowers, produces seeds, and dies within a year. This distinguishes it from other well-known Artemisia species, such as Artemisia vulgaris (common mugwort, a popular culinary herb) and Artemisia absinthium (wormwood).

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Artemisia annua has been known as Qing Hao for over 2,000 years and was traditionally used, among other things, to treat fever. The plant gained worldwide recognition through the discovery of artemisinin—more on this in the history section.

History: From Traditional Chinese Medicine to the Nobel Prize

The modern history of Artemisia annua began in 1968, during the Vietnam War: A state-run Chinese research program (known as “Project 523”) was tasked with finding an effective malaria treatment. Pharmacologist Tu Youyou searched historical TCM texts and came across Artemisia annua. In 1972, her team succeeded in isolating the active compound artemisinin.

Since then, nearly all malaria therapies recommended by the World Health Organization (ACT, Artemisinin-based Combination Therapy) have been based on artemisinin derivatives. In 2015, Tu Youyou received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for this achievement—still one of the few awards of its kind for an active compound derived from traditional herbal medicine.

Contents: Artemisinin, artesunate, and the whole plant

Chemically, artemisinin belongs to the class of sesquiterpene lactones and contains a so-called endoperoxide bridge. This structure is considered central to its action: When the compound encounters certain iron compounds—such as in blood cells infected with malaria pathogens (plasmodia)—the bridge splits, generating reactive oxygen radicals that damage the pathogen. Substances derived from artemisinin, such as artesunate, are used pharmaceutically as pure compounds.

However, the plant itself contains far more than just artemisinin: Several hundred other secondary plant compounds—including flavonoids, other terpenes, and essential oils—are known to be present together in the whole extract. In naturopathy, there is debate about whether and how this interplay affects bioavailability and efficacy compared with the isolated single compound (the “full-spectrum” or entourage hypothesis). However, scientifically robust clinical comparative studies of whole extracts and pure compounds in humans are still limited—more research is needed before reliable general statements can be made.

Research and controversy: An honest overview

The key here is to clearly distinguish between established knowledge and open research. You can find a complete, linked overview of 93 individually documented studies—from malaria and cancer to safety—in our detailed research overview of Artemisia annua. Here is the short version:

Well established:

  • Artemisinin-based combination therapies are the WHO-recommended standard treatment for uncomplicated malaria.
  • The discovery and mechanism of action of artemisinin in Plasmodium infections have been extensively studied pharmacologically and formed the basis for the 2015 Nobel Prize award.

Under investigation, but not yet conclusively established or not approved for use in humans:

  • Antiviral properties: In vitro studies have shown antiviral effects of artemisinin and artesunate (including research published inClinical Infectious Diseases, Oxford Academic). Clinical studies in humans for viral diseases beyond malaria are still lacking.
  • Antiparasitic effects in livestock: A study published inParasitology(Cambridge University Press) investigated a combination of Artemisia annua and turmeric extracts in chickens with experimentally induced coccidiosis and observed a trend toward lower mortality in the highest-dose group – the authors themselves emphasize, however, that further studies on dosage and mechanism of action are necessary.
  • Cancer research: Preclinical studies (including in theInternational Journal of Oncologyand inMolecular Pharmacology) are investigating artesunate derivatives at the cellular level. No approved cancer therapy based on this approach is currently available.

This gap between preclinical research and approved use is also at the heart of a politically and economically charged debate: While NGOs in tropical regions have been promoting the local cultivation of the whole plant as a low-cost alternative for years, the WHO recommends only standardized artemisinin-based combination therapies. Critics point to increasing reports of artemisinin resistance and raise the question of whether isolating individual compounds is contributing to this development. We deliberately present this debate here from different perspectives without taking a one-sided position.

Uses: Forms of administration

Artemisia annua has traditionally been and is still used today in various forms:

  • Tea/infusion:The dried herb is boiled, left to steep, and strained.
  • Tincture:An alcoholic extract made from fresh or dried herb – this also dissolves fat-soluble compounds that are barely present in aqueous tea.
  • Powder:The dried, ground herb, for example stirred into yogurt or water.

  • Interactions:As with many plant extracts, interactions with medicines cannot be ruled out, especially if you are already taking medication. Please consult a doctor or pharmacist before use.
  • Not a substitute for malaria treatment:If malaria is suspected, immediate medical or tropical-medicine treatment with approved medicines is necessary. Artemisia annua as tea, tincture, or powder is not a substitute for this.
  • Children:As with most plant extracts, we recommend particular caution for children and consulting a doctor beforehand.

Growing and processing: From Tenerife to tincture

For more than ten years, we have been growing Artemisia annua in the Healing Garden in Tenerife – without pesticides, as the plant largely protects itself from pests through its bitter compounds. The seeds require light to germinate and need special conditions for sowing (growing with bottom watering, in full sun). After harvesting in summer, the herb is processed into a tincture: infused, pressed, filtered, and bottled.
