What this collection is—and what it is not

Salutogenesis and adaptogens are often mentioned in the same breath, but scientifically they represent two different levels. Salutogenesis is a health-science model that asks which resources help people maintain or regain health despite stressors. Adaptogens are a heterogeneous phytotherapeutic research term for substances or plants believed to provide nonspecific support for adapting to stress. One therefore does not constitute evidence of efficacy for the other.

A literally complete list of all works would be neither useful nor feasible to present credibly for either field. The classic review on the validity of Antonovsky’s SOC scale alone identified 458 scientific publications and 13 dissertations from the period 1992–2003. Since then, large volumes of observational, interventional, and applied research have been added. For adaptogens, the literature is also distributed across many plants, extracts, dosages, and endpoints.

For this research page, the scope is therefore deliberately kept realistic: it covers foundational works, major systematic reviews and meta-analyses, important human studies, relevant negative or sobering studies, as well as key preclinical and regulatory work. The focus is on stress, sense of coherence, resilience, psychological well-being, fatigue, cognition, sleep, performance, and safety.

How the evidence should be interpreted

Foundational work / concept: Defines terms and models. Important for understanding, but not clinical evidence of efficacy.

Human: Clinical or observational research in humans. Randomization and placebo control increase the evidentiary value, but do not automatically resolve issues such as small sample sizes, short study durations, or product-specific extracts.

Review / Meta-analysis: Summarizes existing research. Its evidentiary value depends on the quality, heterogeneity, and comparability of the included studies.

Animal / Preclinical: Can examine mechanisms and biological plausibility, but is not directly transferable to humans.

Regulatory: Official classification by authorities, such as the EMA. A monograph or assessment report is not blanket confirmation of all advertising or product claims.

Salutogenesis: What the Research Actually Examines

At the center of Antonovsky’s model is the Sense of Coherence (SOC), usually translated as “sense of coherence.” It comprises three dimensions: comprehensibility, manageability, and meaningfulness. It also includes generalized resistance resources, which can help people make sense of and cope with stressors.

The most robust literature does not concern the claim that “salutogenesis cures,” but rather associations between a stronger SOC and various measures of health and quality of life. For example, a 2023 meta-analysis of children, adolescents, and young adults covering 57 studies and 70 samples with 41,013 participants found a moderate negative association between SOC and mental health problems (r = -0.46). This is a substantial association, but it is not yet evidence that artificially increasing the SOC automatically prevents or treats diseases.

Intervention research also exists. A 2025 meta-analysis evaluated 27 randomized studies involving 2,178 people. Non-drug interventions, including salutogenic approaches, improved the SOC immediately after the intervention and for up to about three months; at six months and beyond, no significant overall effect was found. This suggests that the SOC can change, but also that long-term effects should not be overstated.

Adaptogens: A Research Term, Not an Automatic Class of Active Substances

The modern concept of adaptogens dates back to work from the mid-20th century. In today’s literature, Rhodiola rosea, Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha), Panax ginseng, Eleutherococcus senticosus, and Schisandra chinensis are frequently discussed as classic or typical adaptogens. Depending on the definition, newer systematic reviews also include other plants such as Ocimum tenuiflorum, Bacopa monnieri, Gynostemma pentaphyllum, Eurycoma longifolia, or Lepidium meyenii.

Crucially, the evidence cannot be cleanly transferred from one “adaptogen” to another. A positive RCT involving a standardized ashwagandha extract establishes neither the efficacy of every ashwagandha product nor that of a Rhodiola, ginseng, or combination preparation. The plant part, extraction solvent, standardization, dose, accompanying substances, and study duration may all be relevant.

A 2023 systematic review examined 25 studies on nine plants classified as adaptogens. This demonstrates a relevant field of research, but also substantial heterogeneity. For Rhodiola, a systematic review of fatigue conducted as early as 2012 found conflicting results and noted a high or unclear risk of bias in all included studies. The human literature on ashwagandha is now broader, but meta-analyses there also report heterogeneity, extract-specific differences, and limited long-term data.

What is particularly well established—and what is not

Salutogenesis / SOC: Associations between SOC and mental health, quality of life, coping, and work-related health measures are well documented.

Ashwagandha: Several randomized human studies and meta-analyses examine stress, anxiety, sleep, and cortisol.

Rhodiola rosea: Human studies address fatigue, stress, mental performance, mood, and exercise.

Panax ginseng: A large RCT literature examines fatigue, cognition, and other endpoints.

Eleutherococcus senticosus: Clinical studies are comparatively smaller and mixed.

Combination preparations: They do not allow an effect to be reliably attributed to a single plant.

Brief conclusion

Salutogenesis is an established field of health sciences research. “Adaptogens,” by contrast, are not a homogeneous class of substances with automatically identical effects. The clinical evidence is specific to the plant, extract, and endpoint.
