What is Artemisia annua?
Artemisia annua, annual mugwort, is a plant with a long history in Chinese herbal medicine. Its modern scientific significance is primarily associated with artemisinin.
Artemisia annua and our story
In 2014, Dr. Fritz Helmut Hemmerich and I were grappling with questions that seemed quite enormous at the time: How do people and societies respond to new infectious diseases? What role do plants play in different medical traditions? And what can we learn from Artemisia annua?
The video from that time mentions Ebola, Marburg, SARS, and even the possibility of a future pandemic. Six years later, this recording took on an entirely new meaning.
Today, I would formulate some things more precisely. The curiosity behind them has remained.
From Artemisia annua to artemisinin
The modern research history of Artemisia annua is closely linked to Tu Youyou. Her work with traditional sources led to the discovery and isolation of artemisinin and ultimately to the development of modern malaria treatments. She received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for this in 2015.
Artemisinin is not the same as Artemisia annua. Likewise, pharmaceutical derivatives such as artesunate are not the same as a tincture or a plant extract. These precise distinctions are what make the plant’s story so interesting.
The whole plant and individual constituents
One question still fascinates me to this day: What changes when science reduces a complex plant to individual constituents?
Plants contain numerous different secondary plant compounds. How they interact with one another is a legitimate field of research. However, this does not automatically mean that a whole-plant extract is better, more effective, or medically superior.
It is precisely this open question—rather than a ready-made answer—that I find fascinating.
What the research actually examines
Artemisinin and artemisinin derivatives have been studied in numerous areas of medical research. Anyone discussing them should therefore always look closely: Is the subject the plant, a specific extract, an individual constituent, or a medicine developed from it?
In our Adaptopedia, we deliberately distinguish between these levels—not because doing so makes the story less exciting, but because it is what makes the story truly understandable.
This very story is what has continued to make Artemisia annua an extraordinary plant for me, even after more than twelve years.
