Cistus: What scientific studies are available?
I discovered rock rose here in Tenerife years ago. It grows wild, smells wonderful, and is one of the most fascinating plants in the Canary Islands for me.
My first encounter with it was fairly uneventful: I had heard that WALA was working with rock roses, so I collected some myself and made a tincture.
And I was immediately fascinated.
Not only because of its fragrance and beautiful flowers. From the very beginning, I had the feeling: This plant has power.
That is, of course, initially just a personal impression. So I wanted to know: What do we actually know about rock rose?
A plant with a long history
The use of various Cistus species goes back a long way. Rock roses have been known in the Mediterranean region since antiquity and were traditionally used in various ways.
Today, science is also interested in Cistus—particularly in its polyphenols and their antioxidant properties.
And when you start searching the scientific literature, things quickly become interesting.
What is being studied about rock rose?
The list of research areas is surprisingly long.
Cistus species have been studied, among other things, in connection with antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties. There is also research into individual compounds, oxidative stress, and potential applications in a wide range of different areas.
Even topics such as Borrelia, cancer research, veterinary medicine, and use as a natural plant-protection product appear in the scientific literature.
This expressly does not mean that rock rose treats or cures these conditions. Many studies are laboratory studies or basic research and cannot simply be applied to effects in humans.
But they show something else:
Rock rose is a scientifically fascinating plant.
Polyphenols, free radicals, and our cells
I find the polyphenols in rockrose particularly fascinating.
Polyphenols belong to the group of secondary plant compounds and are known for their antioxidant properties. Put simply, antioxidants can help capture reactive molecules—the famous “free radicals”—and thereby limit oxidative stress.
And this is exactly where it becomes interesting to me.
Our cells and their DNA are constantly exposed to environmental influences and metabolic processes. At the same time, our bodies possess sophisticated repair and protective mechanisms.
Research is therefore examining what contribution plant polyphenols may make to protecting against oxidative damage to cells and DNA.
I found that remarkable because it matched an impression I had had of rockrose for a long time: To me, it is a plant associated with protection, regeneration, and beauty.
This is not scientific proof.
But sometimes research begins with an observation and a good question.
Rockrose is not a medicine
Despite all my enthusiasm, this distinction is important to me.
The fact that a plant has been the subject of numerous scientific studies does not automatically mean that this translates into a proven medical effect in humans.
Rockrose is not a miracle cure and does not replace medical treatment.
What we can do, however, is remain curious, examine the existing research, and try to understand why this plant has fascinated people for so long.
That is exactly why I am taking a closer look at it again.

Because instead of making big promises, I find it much more interesting to look at what has actually been studied—and, just as importantly, what cannot yet be concluded from it.
For me, rockrose remains one of my favorite plants.
It grows wild here right outside my front door. It is beautiful. It smells fantastic. It has a long history of traditional use.
And the more I read about it, the more interesting it becomes.
